Social Action

Beth Chaim has formed a Social Action committee with the goal of helping local charitable organizations, focusing on a hands-on approach to enable BCRC participants to engage with the community. Some of the activities in our group‘s first year have been preparing lunches for the Safe Harbor homeless shelter in West Chester, organizing a bingo event for veteran residents of the Coatesville VA hospital, and helping package and deliver food at the JRA. The Social Action Committee is considering ways in which we can help the charity ‗Wings for Success‘. This is a local organization that outfits low-income women for interviews and for the workplace. [See www.wingsforsuccess.org.] One of our primary efforts for Wings, the collection of clothing items, is in the planning stage and there will be further information in the coming months. For further information about Wings for Success, please contact Beth Goldstein, Carole Baker, Sherrie Brady, or Beth Gilbert.

Last winter, we surveyed the congregation to find out how you would like to help the community, and also to learn about the organizations through which some of you are already engaged in "social action." Top interests were helping the elderly and the needy within Chester County/Philadelphia community. We are looking at these interests and at the organizations you told us about in order to plan future activities, especially activities in which the congregation at large can become involved. Please feel free to join our future meetings to learn more and to help guide the future activities of our committee.

Our next committee meeting is scheduled for Sunday morning, December 18, at 10:15 at the synagogue. We hope to see you there. For further information about the committee, please contact Beth Gilbert at brggilbert@comcast.net.
